A piece for 7 Hip-Hop dancers
For a duration of 31 minutes
A meeting, and then another…
…and again another.
A trial, for a little dance…attempt to say something, however there is someone/something
before us, when I dance, when he dances and finally when we all dance…
…to the music composed by Moondog.
Two different worlds. Two conceptions of dance. Some self-taught hip-hop dancers,
a contemporary choreographer. A meeting! Mix the ingredients: rich and varied
propositions from the hip-hop dancers confronted by a significant limitation of
space with it’s unexpected and unavoidable constraints. The shock? Certainly
not ! The reason ? Simply an opening of the spirit and a tolerance from both sides
! An experience worth renewing ? Why not ? A creation ? Absolutely! With all the
indispensable implications and energy!
Marc-Antoine Cueille
Often confronting one another face-to-face, in a remarkable form of codified movement,
Hip-Hop dancers always make me think of classical dancers when, in the middle
of a piece, we applaud the performance of the principle dancer and can name each
movement that is performed. However, this dance is also from our time, a very
physical dance, athletic, where the body is forcefully engaged, where contact
is rare and interaction still has a long way to go. In this piece the hip-hop
dancers have accepted to work under the gaze of a ‘contemporary’ choreographer
who has purposely avoided imposing his own gestures but has simply written the
relations between dancers and with the public. New relations for us all: the bodies
touch, playing with imbalance, strength without violence, whilst supporting with
no aggression, and then the music opens up different perspectives. The bodies
are engaged and under the lights, faces and muscles shine with sweat. The ‘tableaux’
which follow evoke paintings, images, and the cinema.
