If it were possible to speak of only one of our appearances it would be that of the 20th June 2002 where, owing to technical reasons, we were unable to present an extract of our then-current creation ‘Ménagerie’. I had an idea which seemed so obvious: to go on stage and invite the public to join us for a taste of our act from the inside. I remember taking the microphone and saying maliciously ‘Today I will be recruiting…’
It was a wild gamble that we have since repeated many times and that we have entitled ‘L'invitation à danser’, where the public becomes the dancer, the interpreter of the presentation.
Far from being an ‘educational’ alibi or a justification for the welcome received from our different partners who support our work, it is rather through reproducing this moment each time that I consider it a consacration to the public.
It is above all an encounter, a necessary and personal connection as well as a constructive and reciprocal exchange, certainly a meeting that is both constructed and organised but which remains porous in tone and deliciously unpredictable and unexpected.
