Repeat performance for the ‘Festival de Danse’ in Cannes 2009

A flower, an explosion of life. Even though I am there contemplating it, fascinated by such beauty, I am unable to seize this moment, this ‘ponctum’ (from Roland Barthes’ "La chambre claire : note sur la photographie"). Nothing permits me to truly enjoy this instant which slips between my fingers. Maybe it is simply because I know pertinently a what moment time will create it's ‘oeuvre’.

The passage of time…instability…`entropy can only grow’ (Sadi Carnot’s 2nd law of thermodynamics).

Time will measure sooner or later our vain desire to resist it, we will probably be betrayed by our breath, by the water that will flow over our skin… To vainly attempt to seize time. To be the ‘gardener’ of this choreographic work in order to submit the fruits of this interplay between music and dance to the effects of time, a composition, a partition. Speak of the passing of time, the unreachable aspect of an instant, ritualise the ephemeral.

I chose to collaborate with RoMayn  Panassié, writer in Benesh script, so that he could help us, in the way resembling that of the plastician Damien Hirst with his skull covered in diamonds, to truly materialise the skeleton of danse: the partition. After the curtain has fallen, only the partition will traverse time. The dance, due to this writing, will be free of the interpretation and of certain constraints of the representation, far from the ephemeral, far from emotion, far from the living.
